Synopsis

INTEREST.

RL.1 Opening shot of a map of Europe and Africa with a route plotted from London to the Gold Coast. Takoradi, one of the Gold Coast's larger towns is shown. Shots of the streets, the shopping centre, the harbour, the post office, buses, the custom house, new harbour sheds and offices (121-422). Long shot of bushland which had to be cleared before the cocoa butter mills could be built. Buildings are erected. The cocoa beans are laid out in the sun. The full sacks are carried to the buying agents, who inspect samples for quality. The sacks are loaded into small boats which the natives paddle out to the ships (750 ft).

RL.2 To make cocoa butter, the beans are cleaned and roasted. After passing through a cooling tray, they're conveyed to de-husking machines where the shells are removed. The mills are often visited by executives of the Cocoa Marketing Board. The cocoa nibs pass through a grinding mill where liquid is extracted. Butter fat is pressed from the cocoa liquid. A party of students are shown the storage tanks where the butter matures before being sent to the packing department. In the laboratories, tests are made for purity and quality. A timber mill is constructed, so that the mill can make their own packing cases. The mills also generate their own electricity. Trainees examine a photo-electric cell and learn maintenance of equipment (1577 ft).

RL.3 Close-ups of African trainees at their work. A trade union meeting is shown, the European bungalows are visited and amenities shown. Shots of the town. A professional letter writer sits outside the post office. Women traders sit in the market place. The Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah is shown waving to his people (534-558). Shot of the local hospital.
