Synopsis

Emphasises the need for improvement of social conditions and closer integration of all races in East Africa to enable Africans to cope with social and economic changes which have taken place.

Shots of mountains and plains of Tanganiyka (Tanzania), a lake, a herd of bufflao (80). Fifty years ago the country was little known to the European. Countryside seen. Masai warriors with spears and swords (106). The Masai formely lived a tribal life ruled by fear, mutual suspicion and mistrust. Into this land came church missionaries dedicated to bringing Chritianity and love (120). Thus it was not realised that the full impact of civilisation would come, bringing social, economic and cultural upheaval (129). An express train rushes past on the plains watched by natives in tribal dress. The railways were the first sign of the new culture. Views of Nairobi (241-261). Tribal life was polygamous, each wife having her own hut and working for her husband. Women seen in village sitting around fire. The Church stopped polygamy and attempted to persuade Africans the value of Western home life with mutual responsibility for the upbringing of children etc. African couple seen at home, reading to children (462). Dietetics and child care are taught (485). A school for African children, class seen, African teacher, children writing in chalk on slates (524). Older students at GCE level seen in chemistry lab doing experiments (548). Scouting and Guide movements help young Africans to learn to employ their spare time usefully (570). The spiritual driving force for this work is the Church, helping the African to accept the impact of civilisation. CU African faces.
