AMATE - THE GREAT FIG TREE

This film is held by the BFI (ID: 100367).

Synopsis

Shows the ecological system based on the Amate fig tree, found in the tropical forests of Belize. The tree in turn is dependent upon the instinctive behaviour of microscopic black wasps, which lay eggs within the fig, which on hatching move on to another fig causing cross-fertilisation. Other animals shown include howler monkeys, pacas, Jaquarandis and arboreal anteaters.
