Synopsis

DOCUMENTARY. The reconstruction of two sea engagements of the First World War - the Battles of the Coronel of 1st November, 1914, and the Battles of the Falkland Islands of 8th December, 1914.

RL.1 In the South Pacific, Sir Charles Cradock in command of the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron consisting of H.M.S. "Good Hope", "Monmouth" and "Glasgow", prepares to attack the German fleet. The German fleet, consisting of S.M.S. "Leipzig", "Nurnberg", "Dresden", "Gneisnau" and "Scharnhorst" is under the command of Admiral Graf von Spee (954 ft).

RL.2 The battle results in a German victory. In London, Lord Fisher orders a counter-attack to be made by H.M.S. "Inflexible" and "Invincible", under the command of Admiral Sturdee (1818 ft).

RL.3 The ships are made seaworthy and set out. General von Spee approaches the Falkland Islands (2664 ft).

RL.4 The Islanders are prepared, causing the Germans to panic. The cruisers "H.M.S. Kent", "Cornwall", "Glasgow" and "Carnarvon" arrive (3530 ft).

RL.5 A sea battle ensues, resulting in a British victory (4420 ft).

RL.6 The German ships sink. The surviving members of the German crews are rescued by the British ships. News of the British victory reaches Whitewall (5225 ft).
