LORD ROBERTS HOISTING THE UNION JACK AT PRETORIA
This film is held by the BFI (ID: 476471).
Synopsis
ACTUALITY. Boer War. Ceremonies on the occasion of the raising of the Union Jack at Pretoria, 5 June 1900.
Long shot from high angle of British infantry and cavalry lined up to the left of the picture in Church Square, Pretoria, with Lord Roberts on horseback in front leading them in giving three cheers (41). View from high angle looking across the square as lines of troops on parade march towards the camera (87ft).
Note: Filmed by Joseph Rosenthal. Acquired as (PARADE OF TROOPS IN A CITY SQUARE) and identified by Warwick stock, the action matching that given in the Warwick catalogue, and a matching still in the Rosenthal collection. The original film was composed of three shots at 125ft, hence the opening shot of the flag being raised is missing. The fall of Pretoria was seen (falsely) by the British as marking the end of the war.
