Synopsis
INDUSTRIAL. The collection and manufacture of palm nuts and palm oil; travelling shots along the River Niger and its tributaries; and rubber plantations in Nigeria.
Main title (6). Cutting down the palm fruit (24-43); stripping the husk (64-78); a boys holds a pile of nuts in his hands while smiling and laughing at the camera (88); the husk is beaten to a pulp in a mortar (96-129). Scenes in Aba where women refine the crude palm oil - in the open air lots of women tend to metal containers on the ground (132-164). Extracting the kernels from the nuts; men operating a grinding machine (179-190); the kernels and nuts are sifted (194-227). Pan of boys watching the camera, a canoe filled with nuts and the river bank (241). The kernels are mashed for the production of palm kernel oil - in a long wooden trough a row of men mash the kernels with their feet (247-257). Casks are filled with the oil and closed - men hammering the oil casks closed (266-280). Pan along lined up casks bearing the marks DEB and a number (286). The casks are rolled down to the river and lashed together to form rafts (294-345). Casks in storage and in rafts on the river at Abonema (355-367). Loading the casks at Opobo; pan of pier with casks, row boats in the harbour and two large merchant ships docked (374-420). Natives selling palm kernels at Oguta market - a large crowd of Africans, some with baskets, watch the camea (423-446). A paddle steamer - SS Kampfe - docked at Itobe is loaded with palm kernels - Africans carry baskets onto the boat (454-473).
