Synopsis

DOCUMENTARY. A record of the Kearton-Jones expedition to Kenya, in which Colonel Jones and his two cowboys lasso a variety of wild animals, including a lioness, a cheetah and rhinoceros.

Main title (3). [Beginning missing. Porters hired by the Kearton-Jones expedition are inspected with their loads before departure. The expedition sets off from Nairobi, led by three cowboys and their dogs. The expedition crosses a dried up river-bed. Teams of oxen pull wagons across a ford. The expedition's camp. Cowboy in the bush using his lasso]. Cowboys lasso and tether an eland; one of the horses bucks and is difficult to control (49). Closer view of the captured eland on the ground (61). Rider chasing giraffe through the bush (71). Giraffe lassoed (82). The giraffe has further lassoes thrown over its neck (132). Intertitle and gap in film (141). A man fights with a hyena (?) Rl. 2. "II Akt" (1). The hunters' camp; an ox cart passes through the camp (31). Hunters sit down to eat (52). Three cowboys, in the centre is Buffalo Jones, ride to camera; the other two cowboys are named Mr. Means and Mr. Loveless (72). The chase and capture of a cheetah; tethered and carried off (185). The capture of a lioness; she is tethered and hung from a tree; an iron muzzle is placed on her mouth and a harness (?) is fitted; a wire muzzle is then fitted over her head and she is placed on an improvised sledge and dragged off by three horses (504). Oxen drag the sledge to a tree stump where the lioness is tethered and the harness and muzzle removed (630). The lioness is given water (642). A pot is placed by her and water thrown into the pot (681). Ox cart is brought to the site carrying a large wooden crate with bars at one end (726). The crate is unloaded (762). The lioness is forced into the crate (831). The lioness in the cage (833) (1604ft). Incomplete. [Jones jokes with a village herdsman. Africans dancing round a fire. The expedition rides into Nairobi].

Note: Most of the film is shot in extreme long shot. The picture quality is poor throughout.

Note: Begins with intertitle no. 7 and appears to lack end. Last intertitle is numbered 32. The departure and return of the expedition are contained in REISE NACH DEM INNERN AFRIKAS (q.v.)

Note: When compared with the Moving Picture World (25/2/1911) reference the above film is not in the same order and certain scenes eg the camp sport scenes and the serval capture are missing. The original length was 2000ft.
