Synopsis

INTEREST. A woman potter from the Quambo tribe of northern South-West Africa is seen at work. She works smoking a pipe and has some "Omepo" plant in her ear to prevent deafness. Smoothing the interior and exterior of pot with a shell. Finishing the base of the pot. Making an irregular design (162-174). Making a small pot for brewing beer. Clay moulded between hands into irregular cyclinder, then hollowed from centre (177-214). Rim levelled and inside smoothed. Firing-ground cleared, pots arranged on layer of wood, covered with more wood, then fire is lit. Bark for varnish is pounded, mixed with water and heated. When cool splashed on fired pots, then smoothed with hands. Tribal custom that neither man nor girl may handle unbaked pots, nor may a young woman learn the craft until after marriage (376 ft).
