Synopsis
INTEREST. Film shows how the discovery of oil has affected life in Kuwait. Opening shots of a desert sandstorm. Arabs take refuge in their tents. After the storm, a traveller mounts his camel and continues his journey. The centre of life is at the port of Kuwait on the Persian Gulf. Shots of fishing boats and ships in the harbour. Shots of ship-building, one of Kuwait's main indus- tries. The Arabs enjoy trading - shots of several Arabs exchanging pearls. In the evening, shepherds bring their sheep and goats into the town. Life in Kuwait changed when oil was discovered in the desert in the 1930s. Drilling began in 1936 with British and American aid. Shots of giant rigs, tractors and pipes. A steel pier is erected on the sea edge where tankers fill up with the oil. The standard of living rises. A giant sea evaporation plant enables people to have pure water. The wealthy sheiks buy racing horses. Although under British protection, Kuwait has its own security force. A Ministry of Justice is established. A large hospital is built, staffed by Europeans and Arabs. Opthalmic and dental treatment is included. Schools are built for boys and girls. Final shots of western oil representatives being received by sheiks (368 ft).
