5 STEPS TOWARDS A COMMISSION IN THE ROYAL NAVY

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: COI 332).

Synopsis

Dramatised recruitment film for prospective Royal Navy officers.

1. Prospective recruits (in civvies) are taken onboard HMS Dolphin; sequence focuses on one of the recruits, "Brendon" (a Welshman who gives us his thoughts in a voice-over). Training exercises watched by senior officers. Admiralty interview board: Brendon is interviewed about his background, his reasons for wanting to be an officer, his interest in engineering; although he thinks he has done badly, the board are in favour of him. 2. Basic training at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth (officer's voice-over explains the routine): kit inspection, drill, PT and sports. Passing out parade. 3. Officer training: yacht race, navigation, dress code, drill. Late night discussion between two cadets about their authority: "what if somebody refuses to obey me?" Next night, on a 'yomp' across the moors, he assumes authority over the leader of a group of soldiers lost in the wild and leads them home - he asserts his authority and proves he has officer potential. 4. Last term: on a ship for the first time (HMS Scarborough, F.43). Montage of onboard life: washing up, bridge, navigation, launching lifeboat, weapons drill etc. 5. First operations in the Far East for one of the graduates, operating from HMS Garton. While recovering a 2-inch mortar from a sunken ship in an inlet, the party comes under attack, one is hit; through teamwork and authority the sniper is captured, and the mission successfully completed. Our new officer has proved himself - and is rewarded by being given the night watch duties!

Notes

Remarks: enjoyable enough.
