MR CHURCHILL'S VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: COI 414).

Synopsis

A newsreel compilation picture ("presented to the Prime Minister") of Churchill's visit to Washington and Ottawa in December '41 - January '42.

WSC crosses the Atlantic on HMS Duke of York, accompanied by Chiefs of Staff and other aides. In Washington, he arrives at the Capitol and addresses Congress (excerpts from speech include "I might have got here on my own"... "what kind of a people do they think we are?" etc); a crowd outside listens to a broadcast of the speech, and Churchill greets them as he leaves. His consultations with Roosevelt are suggested by film of the 2 leaders posing together. (Reel 2) In Ottawa, he is met by W L Mackenzie King and an enthusiastic crowd; he addresses the Canadian House of Commons (excerpts include "We can play rough too"... "some chicken; some neck" etc). Light-hearted sequences show WSC presented with a fur hat by Canadian pressmen and wearing it to visit an RCAF station, and showing off his siren suit in the White House gardens. He returns to England by flying boat (himself taking controls, and breaking journey at Bermuda); met at Paddington Station by his wife and a huge crowd.
