the PEOPLE'S SINGAPORE NO 12

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: COI 640).

Synopsis

Government information film about Singapore.

Film has three items: (1) 'Yang Di Pertuan Tours'. The Yang di-Pertuan Negara, Inche Yusof bin Ishak, visits parts of Singapore in a 'getting-to-know-you ' tour. The Head of State is seen receiving flowers, attending cultural entertainments, talking informally with the people. At Changi he speaks "to a large crowd of all races, as he did everywhere, on racial harmony." Tolerance is needed during the process of creating national unity and forging a single people. "Judging from the happy mixed crowds on these tours we are well on the way to achieving this ideal." (2) 'Straw Pictures'. Home industry making pictures out of straw for sale to tourists. (3) 'Fire Relief'. Coverage of the aftermath of the Bukit Ho Swee disaster. The fire made 16,000 homeless - a tragedy for all Singapore "already short of low cost homes." The government acts instantly to provide relief - temporary shelter, helping families to locate relatives, first aid, hot drinks and snacks, salvage, etc. The victims wash - "Singaporeans must always be clean!" - and take a hot meal, while aid pours in from home and abroad. Soon, schools are operating again and 95% of the homeless are settled in government flats. "Soon all Singapore's people will be housed in modern blocks like these, and the danger of such devastating fires will be gone forever."
