NIGERIA : the making of a nation

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: COI 645).

Synopsis

An information film on Nigeria, illustrating the advantages of a deliberate and orderly progress to independence.

The film provides a brief survey of national educational and health programmes, Nigerian produce such as palm oil, ground nuts, cocoa, cotton, tin, etc., and elements of the improved communications system, including river transport, railways, roads and airways. The narration emphasises Britain's role in patiently fostering industry and self government, and the traditional loyalty of the Nigerian people who served in two World Wars, and now wish to maintain the Commonwealth link. Sixty years of British influence has left its mark - "There is freedom of speech and thought, and the rule of law." A new nation has joined the world community, one that has put its faith in the "democratic life".
