SUPPLIES TO THE FORWARD TROOPS IN NORTHERN BURMA (31/1/1945)
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 1).
Synopsis
Supplies are dropped from a Dakota to a forward Army division, and local Burmese villagers are employed to collect them, at Twinnge, Northern Burma.
All the supplies to 29th Brigade 36th Division are dropped from the air. The handling of these supplies is carried out by the Indian Composite Issue Section RIASC (Royal Indian Army Service Corps) under the supervision of Subedar S D S Bokhary of Peshewar (India), and the Commanding Officer Captain J J Farrel of the Royal Scots Fusiliers of Paisley (Scotland). The local Burmese villagers are recruited to help to bring in the supplies from the dropping zone. The various cookhouses then draw rations from the dump. A British soldier hands out payment chits to local Burmese villagers. The local people gather the baskets of supplies after they drop from a Dakota and fold the parachutes. After the supplies are loaded and driven to a distribution point cooks take their share and begin cooking. British soldiers line up for food.
Notes
At this point 36th Division (commanded by Major-General F W Festing) was part of Northern Combat Area Command (NCAC) under the American Lieutenant-General Daniel Sultan. NCAC was a multi-national force comprising Mars Task Force (American and Chinese) and two Chinese Armies (New First Army and New Sixth Army) in addition to 36th British Division.
For other film of Burmese labourers receiving their payment, and of a tactical exercise by troops of 29th Brigade, see related items.
