Synopsis

During the night Royal Artillery troops landed on a small island near Ru-Ywa, Burma, and manhandled their 5.5 inch guns into position to shell Japanese positions in the nearby village.

Landing craft and other ships, including a hospital ship, assemble off the coast near Ru-Ywa. A convoy of landing craft unload on the beach. Ordnance BL 5.5-inch Medium Guns of B Troop, 19 Battery, 6th Medium Regiment Royal Artillery are manhandled into position and the range is set. Preparation of 100 pound ammunition for firing. Stinson L-5 Sentinel observation planes on an improvised airstrip ready for take-off. Major Green, the Battery Major, points out targets for the artillery.

The dopesheet gives the range from this island to Ru-Ywa as 1,500 yards.

The official history adds that this artillery troop was landed under the protection of 44 Royal Marine Commando, part of 3 Commando Brigade. 53rd Brigade was part of 25th Indian Division, XV Indian Corps, and 6th Medium Regiment were part of the corps artillery of XV Indian Corps. The Sentinel aircraft are of 656 Air Observation Post Squadron RAF attached to the corps for artillery spotting. More generally, these operatons form part of XV Corps' efforts to clear the Japanese from the Arakan coastal region of Burma.
