BURMESE REFUGEES IN ASSAM (6/9/1944)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 145).

Synopsis

Scenes from a refugee camp at Rangiya (Rangyia) in Assam, India.

Burmese civilians, including men, women and children, cross frame from right to left. A thatched wooden hut stands on the left of frame and slender pagoda spire, on a stepped pyramidal base, stands in the background. Civilians squatting on the ground with hands clasped in prayer; the men and women pray in separate groups. Medium close-up of women praying. A group of women, sitting around a basket, appear to be rolling thick cheroots. Medium close-up of a woman rolling a cheroot while another woman smokes. Three men splitting wood with axes; the man nearest camera is wearing a loin cloth and a broad-brimmed straw hat. Six young men playing chinlon, a game or exercise aimed at keeping a small wicker or cane ball in the air for as long as possible without using one's hands, similar to 'keep-up' played as football training. Group of older men weaving baskets with close-up. Two girls doing embroidery. Civilians gathered around a wireless set. Medium close-up of the group of seated civilians; a number of them turn as one to look at someone in the group (they are presumably reacting to something on the radio but it is not clear what). Women at work planting rice in a paddy field; the time-consuming and labour-intensive nature of the work is apparent. Brief close-up of rice seedlings being planted in the paddy field.

Notes
