WATERPOINT AT 277 MILESTONE ON THE ROAD TO RANGOON (18/4/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 188).

Synopsis

Indian Engineers (possibly of 44th Field Park Company) of 5th Indian Division, IV Indian Corps, use bulldozers to dig a waterhole on the road to Rangoon, Burma.

Various shots of bulldozers at work in the bed of a dry chaung (river or watercourse). A waterhole takes shape. A soldier watches the bulldozer from the wreckage of a bridge. Close-ups of water welling up. Water is pumped out of the hole. An aircraft (probably an RAF Supermarine Spitfire) passes low over a column of motor transport. A canvas water tank. British other ranks filling a bucket from the tanks.

Notes

Dopesheet preamble describes the scarcity of water in Burma's 'dry belt' (before the onset of the monsoon) and gives the daily water ration as a gallon per man.
