RAMP CARGO LIGHTER ON THE RIVER YU (13/11/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 190).

Synopsis

An experimental Type B Ramp Cargo Lighter (RCL) is assembled and launched, with some difficulty, on the River Yu at Ya-Nan, Burma.

An RCL on props at Ya-nan. Indian Engineers at work on various parts; painting, jacking up the hull etc. A derrick is erected. Engineers working on a winch. A couple of ducks or waterfowl with the RCL behind. Various shots of Indian Engineers manually dredging the river to increase its depth before launching the RCL. In fading light the men attempt to push the RCL into the water. In very poor evening light a pair of elephants are used to try and move the lighter. (Footage taken the following day) A chain is stretched across the river to pull the RCL into the water. The chain is fastened round the foot of a tree. Men straining against a winch. Men pushing the RCL. With the light again fading the RCL is seen afloat.

Notes

The dopesheet describes how, while the RCL had given good service in the Arakan, transport difficulties forced a redesign to enable it to be moved over land in smaller pieces. Manufactured in Canada, these were then shipped to India and sent by rail as far as Dimapur. They were then brought by tank transporter to be assembled on-site by Indian Engineers.
