MORTARS AT TOUNGOO (23/4/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 210).

Synopsis

Mortar crews of 56th Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery, 5th Indian Division, engage Japanese snipers near Toungoo, Burma.

An Ordance ML 3-inch mortar is fired. At the command post Sergeant Trotter, in command of the mortars, talks on a radio to an observation post directing the shoot. Poorly focused footage of the mortar battery in action. More footage of the battery in action (with focus corrected). Smoke rising from the target area beyond some derelict buildings. View of a broken bridge with motor vehicles in the background.

Notes

At the time this film was shot 5th Indian Division (IV Corps) was advancing south along the Rangoon road from Meiktila. The advance would be continued by 17th Indian Division, who reached as far as Pegu, 50 miles from Rangoon, in the first days of May 1945.

The footage of the broken bridge is misplaced and belongs at the start of JFU 211, though as both of these films appear on the same reel for viewing purposes, this is not a major problem.
