Synopsis
Allied prisoners of war (POWs), recently liberated from Japanese captivity at Rangoon jail, are seen boarding a ship at Rangoon docks for evacuation to India.
Allied POWs, many wrapped in sheets or blankets, seen walking along a jetty at Rangoon docks. They are in various dress; one is seen wearing a naval officer's hat, another in a Scottish tam o'shanter and another in a Japanese soft cap. Others wear bush hats or berets. They are put aboard a Landing Craft Infantry (Large) (LCI(L)). Panning view of the LCI(L). Crowds of Burmese civilians at Rangoon docks. An amphibious Supermarine Sea Otter flying boat on the Rangoon river. A Fairmile D Class motor gun boat on the river. Crowds of civilians. On a street in Rangoon an Ordnance QF 25-pounder field gun is towed behind a lorry. Two bullocks tow a cart, apparently laden with kit bags, with British servicemen following on foot. British servicemen riding on the cart.
Notes
Presumably the POWs were transferred to a larger vessel from the LCI(L) once they had reached deeper water. The IWM holds film of Rangoon POWs arriving in Calcutta on the hospital ship HMHS Karapara so this may be the vessel to which they were transferred. See related items.
For other film of the liberation of Allied POWs from Rangoon see related items.
