Synopsis
Lieutenant-General Sir Oliver Leese, Commander-in-Chief Allied Land Forces South East Asia (ALFSEA), visits a variety of locations in Rangoon, capital of Burma.
Leese leaving St Gabriel's Church in Rangoon. Leese and party leaving the Garrison Theatre. Leese and party visits the Rangoon Boat Club canteen and cinema. Leese talking with female staff at the Boat Club canteen. Party leaving the club. Two fire engines pass camera. Leese watches a firefighting demonstration. Tracking shot from a moving jeep showing Leese's jeep with Sule pagoda in the background. Leese arrives at a YMCA centre for Indian troops. Leese arrives at a 'Salvation Army Red Shield Club'. Underlit interior footage, possibly at Civic Hall. Interior footage at a British General Hospital; Leese meets patients. Leese departs. Tracking shot shows Leese's motorcade driving along Rangoon's streets. Leese visits a Welfare Canteen. Leese arrives at TOC HQ (Tactical Operations Centre?) and before leaving talks with a number of British troops leaning out of a window. Leese at Rangoon docks. He goes aboard a merchant ship berthed in the harbour. Leese watches as a lorry is hoisted out of the ship's hold; behind him a sign reads 'No Smoking' in four languages. At a YMCA club Leese sits in the middle of a large group of (British and Indian) female staff. Leese departs. The group of YMCA staff pose for the camera.
Notes
The dopesheet adds that Leese was accompanied by Brigadier L J Woodhouse (misnamed W J Woodhouse) commander No. 1 Area (Rangoon) of South Burma District and Major-General Bastyan, Chief Administrative Officer ALFSEA.
Also named on the dopesheet are a Mrs Brackenberry of Harrow (seen at the canteen) and Lieutenant-Colonel Frank Owen, the editor of the newspaper 'SEAC' (seen at Civic Hall).
Shortly after this film was shot Leese was replaced as commander of ALFSEA by General Slim, following an ugly dispute over the command of 14th Army for the anticipated invasion of Malaya.
