This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 293).

Synopsis

Japanese envoys, led by Lieutenant-General Takazo Numata (Chief of Staff, Southern Army) and Rear Admiral Kaigye Chudo (Deputy Chief of Staff) sign a preliminary treaty at Government House, Rangoon, Burma.

Japanese officers arrive at Government House and go inside. Interior footage; the Japanese officers approach a table and wait as the Allied delegation files in and take their seats. The instrument is signed and the various papers transferred from one desk to the other. The Japanese officers stand up and leave the hall and the Allied delegation does likewise.

Notes

The agreement signed here was a preliminary step to facilitate the Allied occupation of Japanese-held territory in Burma and elsewhere in South East Asia, following an unconditional Japanese surrender on 15 August.

The signing of this agreement was covered in detail by British Army and RAF cameramen and photographers. See related items.
