PRISONERS OF WAR LIBERATED FROM SIAM EMBARK AT RANGOON FOR CALCUTTA (12/9/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 314).

Synopsis

Former Allied prisoners of war, released from Japanese captivity in Siam (Thailand), board a landing craft to a transport ship for passage to Calcutta.

Wideshot of two parked lorries with released prisoners of war getting out. Men wait a while before walking to a reception area. Men drink tea outside a building marked 'WASB Canteen'. A dense column of men walks towards the docks and pass a sign marked 'Concentration Area'. They walk along a jetty before boarding a Landing Craft Medium. The landing craft's mooring roped is untied. The landing craft, which is marked H200, moves off and heads towards a transport ship berthed in the Rangoon river. The transport has a single funnel with black band around the top, and a single mast both fore and aft.

Notes

'WASB' stands for Women's Auxiliary Service (Burma), a voluntary service which provided mobile canteen facilities to troops during the campaign, often in surprisingly advanced positions. For film of one such canteen operating at Shillong in Assam (India) see related items.

For footage of prisoners of war being flown out of Siam, see related items.
