OCCUPATION OF PERAK BY 25TH INDIAN DIVISION (16/9/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 360).

Synopsis

Shot on 16 September 1945: three Japanese representatives of the Ipoh garrison pass camera. Interior footage; the Japanese officers meet officers of Force 136 (Special Operations Executive) and staff officers of 25th Indian Division; a map is handed over. Two Japanese officers leaving. A civilian parade in Ipoh; banners, Chinese nationalist flags and smaller triangular (white?) flags are in evidence. Crowd shots. Mobile shots; the camera passes a number of men with musical instruments (trombone, trumpet, clarinet). Civilians get down from the back of a lorry with flags and banners. Crowd shots.

Shot on 29 September 1945: towed 25-pounder guns of the Berkshire Yeomanry arrive on the padang (a large open green space) in Ipoh and form up. Rear view of a 25-pounder with gun crew in position. Crew working their gun; in the background a shower of burning wadding from an adjacent gun can be seen. Another gun firing. Two light aircraft overhead. Seen in silhouette, an officer (probably the divisional commander, Major-General G N Wood ('G E Woods' on the dopesheet)) salutes as the guns pass. A column of vehicles, headed by a jeep, two motorcycles and another jeep followed by towed guns, passes through an arch. Reverse angle shows inscription 'A Happy Return to Perak Long Live the Allies'. Crowds watching. View of the padang; camera pans right to guard of honour. Guard presents arms. Major-General Wood inspects. Civilian procession including banners, flags, Chinese dragons and large drums carried on poles. A lorry load of Indian troops passes with some waving to civilians. A banner reads 'Ceylonese welcome victorious forces'. Civilians reading a paper fixed to a wall. A sign on a building reads 'Malaya Tribune'; camera tilts down to civilians outside the building. Pedal trishaws passing, one of them full of small children.

With the surrender of Japan, troops of 25th Indian Division occupy the state of Perak in Malaya, while the people of Ipoh stage a celebratory procession and gunners fire a salute.

Notes

About half of this item's second reel (crowd shots in Ipoh) has been printed in reverse; i.e. the crowd appears to move backwards.

According to the cameraman's dopesheet, the shots of the paper and the Malaya Tribune building were intended to illustrate how life in Ipoh was quickly returning to normal.

The 'Ceylonese' banner reflects the large number of Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) Tamils who had formed a large proportion of the Malayan civil service and of various technical and professional fields during the British colonial administration.
