GOVERNMENT HOUSE, RANGOON: PARADE BEFORE HANDOVER FROM MILITARY TO CIVIL ADMINISTRATION (9/10/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 364).

Synopsis

A week before the handover of responsibility for Burma from military to civil administration, a parade is held at Government House, Rangoon, with Lord Mountbatten in attendance.

Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia, inspects men of the Burmese Patriotic Forces (BPF, formerly Burma National Army). Mountbatten issuing his Order of the Day. Mountbatten shaking hands with United States Army Brigadier-General C C Fenn (Judge-Advocate, China-Burma-India theatre).

Notes

The Rangoon garrison evacuated in the face of advancing Japanese troops on 7 March 1942. It was not reoccupied until May 1945 and between May and 16 October 1945 was run by a British Military Administration. This film, while unremarkable visually, represents nonetheless a key phase in Burma's history and the wider history of British Asia.

The presence of the BPF men is significant. They had previously been the Burma National Army under Aung San. Aung San had gone from being a pre-war nationalist nuisance, to the head of a Japanese-sponsored paramilitary force (the Burma National Army's forerunners) and then leader of a popular anti-Japanese uprising and national hero before being assassinated in July 1947.
