ENTRY INTO HONG KONG: VIEWS FROM HMS GLENGYLE (11/9/1945)
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 369).
Synopsis
HMS Glengyle, an infantry landing ship carrying men of 3 Commando Brigade, makes its way towards Hong Kong.
View aboard Glengyle with men of 3 Commando Brigade on deck. View of Mount Victoria taken through the gunshield of a 20mm gun. The ship passes the Royal Navy's King George V Class battleship HMS Anson. An almost totally obscured shot of a local boat. Local boat alongside. Panning views, one with naval officers in foreground. Local sailing junks pass with a Colossus Class aircraft carrier, either HMS Vengeance or HMS Venerable behind. Officers with binoculars.
Notes
HMS Glengyle was a 10,000-ton Landing Ship Infantry (Large) and saw service at Dieppe, Operation Torch, and the landings on Siciliy, Salerno and Anzio.
Dopesheet identifies the commandos on deck as being part of No.5 Army Commando and No.43 Royal Marine Commando. However, 43 Commando were not part of 3 Commando Brigade, and so the latter must either be 42 or 44 Commando.
