This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 40).
Synopsis
Troops of 19th Indian Division have cleared the Japanese from positions at the top of Monastery Hill, Burma, but the Japanese have tunnelled under the foundations of the monastery and are holding out against the 4th Battalion 4th Gurkha Rifles.
Shelling of the building and Japanese positions puts up clouds of smoke amongst Buddhist pagodas. Airstrikes by three Hurribombers (RAF Hawker Hurricane fighter-bombers) on Fort Dufferin in the distance. Vultures perch on a tree near the scene of the battle and then fly off.
Notes
Gurkha troops seen in this film are of 98th Indian Infantry Brigade.
Mandalay, Burma's second city, was an objective of great importance due to its prestige value and logistical connections, and was also the site of a large Japanese supply dump.
Operations for the capture of Mandalay were extensively covered by other British Army cameramen. See related items.
