This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 413).

Synopsis

Film documenting the training of the Kuantan Police force, 'after three and a half years of enforced idleness under the Japanese' by two British officers of the British Military Administration in Malaya.

Men of the Kuantan police doing physical training ('restoring the confidence of the Police in themselves') on a green, including some sort of 'strengthening game' which looks like a cross between leapfrog and a rugby scrum. Captain Stewart, of the 13th Frontier Force Rifles, and Lieutenant Lack Royal Engineers, of 5th Parachute Brigade, apparently planning a police raid over a map. Close-up of the map with title 'Malaya' visible. Lack summons a messenger who runs over. Police trainees doing rifle drill with Japanese rifles. Closer shot. Lack takes the salute as a unit of policemen march past. View of the unit marching past taken from the middle of the road; the police pass the camera on both sides. Low-angle close-up of Lack. Policemen rush out of the station and form up on the green. Lack follows armed with a Thompson submachine gun. A Sikh policeman loads his rifle. Close-ups of two Sikh policemen, followed by close-ups of two Malay policemen. Shot of an entrance arch marked 'Police Station Kuantan'. A Malay sentry hits a metal gong with a mallet. Stewart and Lack walk to their car. Shots of the married quarters and barrack block of the police station. Lack tries to strike a determined pose with his Tommy gun but fails to get the grin off his face.

Notes

A well shot piece with a strong narrative, depicting an important stage in returning Malaya to normal civil life.

Dopesheet describes the state of the policemen's equipment when the British returned as 50 shotguns (75% unserviceable) with one cartridge each, and a single pair of handcuffs, and the unit's strength as 3 sergeant majors, 2 sergeants, and 84 men.
