Synopsis

Film showing a number of slogans, posters and graffiti during rising political unrest in Batavia, Dutch East Indies (Jakarta, Indonesia).

A large hoarding shows a cartoon; the details are unclear but it bears a large caption 'We don't like the Dutch!'. Two posters; one above in Indonesian and another below which reads 'Grant us the right to exist as a free nation. The right to live and work together with other nation [sic] on basis of absolute equality'. Sign reads 'Freedom for all nations'. Graffiti reads 'Indonesia for the Indonesians!'. Graffiti reading 'Freedom, the Glory of a nation!!!'.

Notes

When this film was shot British and Indian troops were arriving in force in Indonesia. They encountered a country home to an increasingly aggressive popular nationalism, a large number of interned Europeans and Eurasians expecting to resume their pre-war status, and tens of thousands of Japanese who had surrendered but were still armed. For other examples of slogans and graffiti, see related items.
