Synopsis

Lieutenant-General Sir Miles Dempsey, commander Allied Land Forces South East Asia, visits troops on garrison duty on Labuan island off Borneo.

Dempsey inspects the guard. Dempsey and Major-General R H R Steward get into a staff car. Dempsey meets the senior naval officer on Labuan, Commander C P M Armstrong, and the American port director, Lieutenant M O'Malley US Navy. Dempsey is amused to find a small monkey sitting on the steering wheel of a jeep belonging to 134 Workshop Company, Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Dempsey meets staff of 87 Indian General Hospital with the commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel M L A Devan.

Notes

With surprising candour, the cameraman remarks on his dopesheet '...nothing much else occurred, in fact from the film point of view it was merely a routine visit'.

Guard of honour provided by the RAF Regiment and 3rd Battalion 8th Gurkha Rifles. Also named on the dopesheet is an Australian officer, Lieutenant-General E J Milford, described as a corps commander but actually commanding 7th Australian Division.
