Synopsis

Local Chinese civilians take part in an identity parade in order to identify Japanese troops suspected of war crimes at Sham Shui Po internment camp in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Union flag flying; camera tilts down to a parade of Japanese personnel. A Chinese villager is led along the line of Japanese troops accompanied by a Chinese man in civilian dress, a military policeman with a pipe (?), a Royal Navy intelligence officer acting as an interpreter, and an Indian captain wearing the insignia of GHQ India. The man with the pipe makes notes; the camera pans across the group to the Japanese troops. More Chinese civilians walk along the line. Looking through one rank of Japanese prisoners to another being inspected behind. Close-up of a bespectacled Japanese officer, apparently repeatedly identified by the Chinese as having executed civilians with his sword. A Chinese civilian with his hand on the shoulder of the Japanese officer seen in the previous close-up. Close-up of the civilian. The Royal Navy officer addresses the Japanese personnel. The accused are fallen out and marched at the double to one side; a commando with a cosh sorts them out into a single rank. Watching civilians; fast pan to the other Japanese being marched away at the double. Slow pan of the watching civilians.

Notes

The purpose of this parade was to identify suspects responsible for the murder of an unspecified number of Chinese civilians at Silver Mine Bay on Lantao (Lantau) Island on 19 August 1945.

The Japanese officer had been identified by all but two of the civilians brought to identify the Japanese, and did not deny the accusations.

Only one officer is identified on the dopesheet, a Chief Inspector Tyler of the Hong Kong Police.

For film of the opening of the trial of men accused of involvement in the Silver Mine Bay atrocities, see related items.
