MARCH PAST OF 'BRINDJAP' FORCES IN HONG KONG (1946-03-23)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 561).

Synopsis

In Hong Kong, British and Indian troops of the so-called 'Brindjap' force, bound for the occupation of Japan, mount a march past.

High shot looking over the docks at Hong Kong; a stream of troops are disembarking from the berthed HMT Dunera via a portside forward gangway. The camera follows men marching along the dockside and a unit of kilted Scottish soldiers (probably 1st Battalion Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders). Ground level shot shows Scots troops disembarking; camera pans to show an Indian band (some of the men can be seen to be carrying bugles or trumpets) formed up on the quay, probably the band of the Kumaon Regiment (formerly 19th Hyderabad Regiment). Camerons marching off; Union flag insignia can be clearly seen on their uniforms. Footage of the march past; high shot looking down as the Cameron Highlanders pass. Ground level shot with women of the Women's Auxiliary Service (Burma) (WAS(B)s). Gurkha troops pass. Major-General Frank Festing, General Officer Commanding Hong Kong, at the salute. Beside him stands Major-General David 'Punch' Cowan. The Kumaon band passes. Festing and Cowan chat over cigarettes. Festing inpects women of the various auxiliary services accompanying the troops to Japan; woman nearest camera has the badge of the Red Cross & St John Ambulance Joint War Organisation. Medium close-up of a WAS(B). Close-up of a young lady with fair hair. Festing chats informally with a number of women.

Notes

Cowan had been the commander of 17th Indian Division throughout most of the Burma campaign, most notably at the seizure and defence of Meiktila.

Dopesheet lists other units as including the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, the Women's Voluntary Service, the Young Women's Christian Association and Queen Alexandra's Imperial Naval Nursing Service.
