EMBARKATION OF TROOPS AT KYAUKPYU ON RAMREE ISLAND FOR LETPAN LANDING (12/3/1945)

This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 68).

Synopsis

British troops of 4th Indian Infantry Brigade under the command of Brigadier Forman leave Kyaukpyu (Burma) on the northern end of Ramree Island for the landing at Pyin Wan in order to cut off the Japanese last escape line in that area.

Brigadier Forman talks to his beach group officers on the beach; various craft can be seen in the sea behind him. British troops board an LCA (Landing Craft Assault) as more troops line up to board the next one. The front ramp on the LCA closes and a bulldozer is used to push the craft into the water. The bulldozer backs onto the beach and the LCA departs. More troops board various small craft. The cameraman moves on board an LCA and the troops file on board. The LCA approaches H.95 HMS Roebuck an R Class destroyer and ties up alongside so the troops can board from the LCA.

Notes

4th Indian Brigade (26th Indian Division) was landed on 13 March 1945, and 2nd Battalion 13th Frontier Force Rifles established a roadblock on the 15th. This led to the destruction of three Japanese light tanks and the capture of two more, along with a 75mm gun and the dispersal of the accompanying infantry. After this 4th Indian Brigade advanced southwards, reaching the Tanlwe Chaung by 22 March 1945.
