MANDALAY - MORTAR FIRE AND AIRSTRIKES (18/3/1945)
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 75).
Synopsis
Troops of 19th Indian Division enter Mandalay, Burma, but the Japanese defending Fort Dufferin still hold out despite mortar fire and air strikes from British forces.
Men march in single file along a country road carrying packs and rifles and wearing their steel helmets. Troops stand near traditional Burmese huts. Troops march from left to right along the road; mules stand by the roadside and nibble grass. More men march past and mules are also pulled along the road. A mortar battery fires 3-inch mortars into Fort Dufferin. The Japanese HQ in Fort Dufferin seen from Mandalay Hill is ablaze. A large column of smoke rises and a reflection of the blaze appears in the water in the moat. Republic P-47 Thunderbolts sweep past Mandalay Hill, some at the same level as the camera, on bombing runs aimed at the walls of the fort.
Notes
Mortar unit may be 33rd Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery, which was part of 19th Indian Division, but this is not certain.
Mandalay, Burma's second city, was an objective of great importance due to its prestige value and logistical connections, and was also the site of a large Japanese supply dump.
Operations for the capture of Mandalay were extensively covered by other British Army cameramen. See related items.
