Synopsis
After the capture of Fort Dufferin, Mandalay, Burma, British troops enter the fort complex to witness a flag raising ceremony carried out by Lieutenant-General W J Slim General Officer Commanding 14th Army.
A column of British troops from 2nd Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment march towards Fort Dufferin and through the gate, they carry rifles. Indian and Gurkha troops line the road that they are marching along. Troops march past as a Gurkha soldier looks on. A motorcycle outrider rides along the same road lined with Indian and Gurkha troops and is closely followed by two jeeps full of officers. Lieutenant-General Slim walks down a line of troops inspecting them and stops to chat to a couple of the men. Slim then climbs wooden steps to a wooden platform, unfurls a Union flag and leads two cheers by punching the air and holding his hat. The officers on the platform with him join in the cheering. Slim walks off down the platform steps and past the ranked soldiers. A group of officers including Major-General Sir C G G Nicholson (General Officer Commanding 2nd Division), Major-General T W Rees (General Officer Commanding 19th Indian Division), Air Vice Marshal S F Vincent (Air Officer Commanding No.221 Group RAF), General M G N Stopford (General Officer Commanding XXXIII Indian Corps) and General D D Gracey (General Officer Commanding 20th Indian Division) stand and chat after the ceremony.
Notes
Mandalay, Burma's second city, was an objective of great importance due to its prestige value and logistical connections, and was also the site of a large Japanese supply dump.
Operations for the capture of Mandalay were extensively covered by other British Army cameramen. See related items.
See JFU 80 and 81 for more footage of the same event.
