GENERAL SIR GEORGE GIFFARD INSPECTS TROOPS (4/8/1944)
This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: JFU 88).
Synopsis
General Sir George Giffard, Commander-in-Chief 11th Army Group, inspects his forward troops near Tamu on the Indian-Burmese border.
General Giffard chats to other officers, including Major-General O L Roberts, General Officer Commanding 23rd Indian Division, whilst inspecting a bulldozer and other material destroyed in fighting against the Japanese. A Japanese Type 97 Te-Ke tankette is badly damaged; it has no track left on one side. Conditions under foot are very muddy. The officers walk away. General Giffard inspects units on the Tiddim Road including an Indian regiment and 4th Battalion Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Mountains tower in the background as General Giffard walks past tents in the encampment. Giffard gets off a truck and is led into the jungle where he chats to shirtless men who stand alongside traditional huts. He inspects men, who wear their tin hats, then walks off. A Japanese flag has been laid out in the mud and a pair of booted feet walk over it, wipe their muddy soles on the flag and then continue walking.
