Notes

The dopesheet refers to events 7 and 11 May 1944 and mentions 1st Queen's and Gurkhas. The Gurkha battalion is not specified but probably 4th Battalion 1st Gurkha Rifles.

Close to Jail Hill is Garrison Hill, the site of the memorial to 2nd Division. This memorial includes the famous inscription known as the Kohima Epitaph, which reads: 'When you go home / Tell them of us and say / For your tomorrow / We gave our today'. The words are attributed to an English classicist, John Maxwell Edmonds (1875 - 1958), and are reminiscent of words by the Greek poet Simonides of Ceos, writing about the Spartan dead of Thermopylae.

The dopesheet lists the following as having been in attendance:

Lieutenant-General Stopford, XXXIII Corps commander.

Major-General F W Messervy, 7th Indian Division.

The Deputy-Assistant Chaplain General, Lieutenant-Colonel B Stratton

The (unnamed) Brigade commander (Brigadier F J Loftus Tottenham?)

The officer commanding 1st Queens and officers and men of 1st Queens and 4/1st Gurkhas.
