Synopsis

"Kai Yuan" (10 April 1940): camera focuses on tribespeople in distinctive costume trading with Chinese in the walled city. Long shot coverage over Chinese shoulders of the public execution by shooting of two alleged spies by soldiers of the Chinese Army (described in letter from Grimsdale to his wife). Scenes at railway station of cargo loading and Chinese passengers waiting.

"Chungking - South Bank of River Yangtze" (16-26 April 1940) River traffic scenes, with Chinese porters carrying loads to and from boats on the Yangtze. "Chungking City" Porters carry goods and Chinese up and down steep stairs in town. Europeans descend steps of house. Japanese prisoners, handcuffed in pairs, pass camera as they climb flight of steps; one shields his face from the camera. Scenes of river traffic and riverside scenes, Chinese housing and contrast between Chinese porters bearing heavy loads on bamboo poles and other Chinese being carried in sedan chairs. "Confluence of Jaoling River and Yangtze River": Pan over river transport, unloading scenes and houses built on stilts.

Amateur film with titles shot by Colonel G E Grimsdale when serving as the senior Army member of the Far Eastern Combined Intelligence Bureau (FECB) records scenes during his tour of French Indo-China, China and Burma in April-May 1940.
