Synopsis
Amateur film with titles shot by Alaric Rowntree while serving as Director of Communal Feeding for the Ministry of Food (and Colonial Office) in Malta during the critical period from July to December 1942, and later shown to ministers and officials in London, records both historic and contemporary aspects of the island's history, concentrating on air raid damage and the feeding of the beleaguered Maltese by Victory Kitchens and other innovations of the Community Feeding Department.
Notes
Summary: Alaric Rowntree, a Quaker and Conscientious Objector, volunteered for ARP duties in 1937, qualifying as a lecturer before being elected by his colleagues Head Warden for Frognal Ward. In early 1940 he was appointed District Officer in charge of Food Front Publicity in the Ministry of Food for the North West of England, and moved to Cheshire in the summer. In July 1942 he transferred to Malta for six months, and later served as Director of the Food Division in the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation (UNRRA) Mission to Greece from August 1945 to November 1946.
