Synopsis
Reel1: Staff College Course visit to tank demonstration at Royal Armoured Corps, Bovington and visit to Royal Navy (F141 and carrier RO9 at sea). (1958)
Reel 2: Cyprus. Headquarters 3 Infantry Brigade on exercise. Landing in Nicosia, with Greek Cypriot children's band and demonstration by Turkish Cypriots. Parachute drop at RAF Nicosia, with Captain Peter Stuart-Richardson (Coldstream Guards). Off-duty scenes at Kyrenia Castle, and in Cypriot houses used by British as married quarters. Picnic during visit of Brigadier W W Cheyne (Seaforth Highlanders). By air to Beirut, to visit Baalbek and other sites in Lebanon. (1959)
Reel 3: Libya. Short sequence as observer/umpire during exercise with 2 Parachute Brigade, showing desert camouflage of vehicles RAF Idris. (1959 or 1960)
Reel 4: Queen's Birthday Parade by 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders at Selarang Barracks, Changi, Singapore. Cocktail party in Officers' Mess, Selarang, after parade. QOH pipes and drums beat retreat with military band. Sailing at RAF Sailing Club, Changi. Sequence taken during early tour (pre-Confrontation) of duty in Sabah, North Borneo. Platoon bases at Tawau (sawmill building) and Kudat. Company HQ base at Sandakan. Christmas lunch for all ranks in makeshift canteen. Expedition by QOH detachment in river boat (Sabah Marine Police) inland to investigate damage to remote village crops by elephant. Sequence of wives' club water-skiing in sea channel between Singapore and Malaya. Launch of small speedboat made by soldiers and NCOs as an offduty project.
Reel 5: North-East Sarawak. After arrival of "D" Company, 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders by Pioneer aircraft at Long Akah, construction of temporary long-house beside airstrip to provide accomodation, for own men and for Border Scouts. Air-drop of supplies and weapons; recruitment and kitting of tribesmen (Kayan, Kinyan, Punan and Kelabit) as Border Scouts. Weapons training and other basic training taught by example (no common language); elementary jungle patrol contact training, followed by live firing on makeshift ranges. Visit by Brigade Commander and Commanding Officer of 1st Queen's Own Highlanders. Camp life and impromptu games of Border Scouts. Viist by tribal chief in full regalia to address Border Scouts and hand out BS shoulder patches at end of training. Expedition upriver (Baram ?) in large dug-out war canoes to enable individual Border Scouts to be seen in own long-houses and to demonstrate live firing capacity at each. Visits by air to distant training locations at Lio Matoh and Barrio, including Special Air Services (SAS) representative at latter. Refuelling aircraft by bucket and rope at Long Akah. Departure by air, prior to start of Confrontation with Indonesia.
Reels 6-7: Sharjah. Reconnaissance visit to Sharjah (in preparation for later Territorial Army training exercise by Company of 51 Highland Volunteers). Road travel, air travel and on foot in desert and mountainous areas in company of Major John Whitelaw (ex-Seaforth Highlanders) of Trucial Oman Scouts.
Reels 8-9: Berlin. Military parade by Berlin Brigade, including 1st Battalion Queen's Own Highlanders, in Olympic Stadium, attended by Queen Elizabeth II.
Amateur film shot by Major James O'Connor of the Seaforth Highlanders (later Queen's Own Highlanders) while attending Staff College course in UK (1958) and serving in Cyprus (1959), Libya with 2 Parachute Regiment (1959 or 1960), Singapore and Borneo (1962-1963), with native Border Scouts in Sarawak (1963), Sharjah (1967) and Berlin (late 1960s).
