Synopsis

MGH 5130: Scenes in Malaya ca 1950 include Gurkhas swimming with officers off Penang Island, armoured train sequence and rail jeep used during Emergency for transport up country.

MGH 5131- 5132: Scenes in Malaya ca 1950 include Cameron Highlands hill station, Ipoh horse races, Penang swimming, Gurkha sports and prize-giving by Colonel Townsend, young Gurkha recruits in training, Singapore Causeway, scenes in Singapore (in 1949 during staff job) showing contrast between poor Chinese areas and imposing colonial architecture, baby scenes of first daughter Caroline, voyage back to UK via Aden to attend Staff College course at Minley Manor (with future US Army Vietnam General Jack Tolson), and course tour of D-Day beaches.

MGH 5133: Mostly family holiday scenes in Italy, then bus tour of East Berlin (in 1955) with semi-clandestine film of sites, including Soviet War Memorial, communist red banners on public buildings and statue of Stalin, Brandenburg Gate, then flower float musical procession through Amsterdam, concluding with brief view of British Generals (Gale, Templer, Harding?) during BAOR exercise in West Germany.

MGH 5134: Mostly family baby scenes in West Germany (plus Nuremberg Ring motorcar race), then in Malaya. Troop of medium guns in Cameron Highlands prepared for firing against CTs (Communist Terrorists). Gurkhas guard requisitioned house in Cameron Highlands inhabited by Captain Rhodes James and his young family, and patrol perimeter of garden adjacent to threatening jungle. Two Army helicopters take off.

Amateur film shot by Major William Rhodes James while serving with the 1st Battalion 6th Gurkha Rifles in Malaya during the early period of the Malayan Emergency, and in other postings before 1956 (Germany, D-Day Beaches, etc).
