Synopsis
Reel 1: Various dignitaries attend the passing out ceremony of the first six Kenyan Air Force pilots, who have undergone their training with the Royal Air Force. Those attending include Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya president, and Malcolm McDonald, the British High Commissioner . Flypast by six de Havilland Beaver aircraft in formation. Dignitaries depart by car. The Howard family travel to Nanyuki by car, pausing on their journey by the side of the road for a break. Mrs Howard and daughter Sandie are seen by car. Journey recommences along dusty roads, taking in local scenery. Family reaches small town. Master Pilot Howard walks towards camera clutching what appears to be recently purchased provisions. Journey continues. Signpost for Mount Kenya Safari Club. The family arrives at a house in the countryside. Sandie runs towards camera holding a bottle of water or lemonade. Various views of house and gardens. Family go for a walk with dog. Sign for Eastleigh Retreat. Views of Mount Kenya. Sandie playing in wild meadow. Walk through woods with dog. Reel 3: The Howard family visit the local zoo and safari park. Views of cheetahs, gorillas, monkeys, lions and leopards in compounds. People watching animals. Deer in enclosure. Zebras and rhinos grazing in open parkland.
Reel 4: Members of the Royal Air Force Motor Sports Association (RAFMSA) compete in the East African Safari Rally. Cars racing through streets crowded with spectators and camera crews .
Reel 5: Street parade in unidentified location in the United Kingdom. Various floats adorned with flowers and other decorations (visible at the rear of one the vehicles is an advertising sign for 'Bourne of Ramsgate') Servicemen marching through street accompanied by a brass band.
Reel 6: Aerial shots filmed from cockpit of Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer aircraft. Overflying dense woodland, roads and dwelling areas. Views of Mount Kenya from the air.
Reel 7: Twin Pioneer XL970 of 21 Squadron taxis in at unidentified airfield. Contents of aircraft are unloaded. Another Twin Pioneer lands. Shots of accommodation buildings.
Reel 8: Twin Pioneer XL968 of 21 Squadron at unidentified airfield (possibly in Basutoland, now Lesotho). Air-to-air footage of Twin Pioneer aircraft in flight. Co-pilot seemingly fast asleep. Shots of Twin Pioneer in air crossing large expanse of scrubland, built up areas and high-rise buildings. Panning shots of scenery. Open scrubland with hills in background. View of two Twin Pioneer aircraft on ground. A Vickers Varsity takes off from an impromptu scrubland runway (aircraft type to be confirmed), followed by a Twin Pioneer. Further aerial shots. Notes
Summary: C.J.S. Howard joined the Royal Air Force in 1941. Brief details of his military service as follows:
May 1953 to August 1959 - RAF Benson, Oxfordshire. Ferry pilot with 147 Squadron. Ferried some 300 F-86 Sabre jets from Canadair in Montreal to India, Iraq, Malaya and Kenya via RAF Benson. During this period, Howard also ferried Hunters, Venoms, Vampires and Meteors.
August 1959 to September 1961 - RAF Sylt, Germany.Target towing duties.
September 1961 - RAF Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. Link trainer course.
October 1961 to June 1964 - RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire. Link trainer instructor.
June 1964 to May 1965 - RAF Eastleigh, Kenya. Flew Twin Pioneer aircraft with 21 Squadron to Somalia moving troops and equipment, and returning Kenyan dead to Nairobi.
August 1965 to March 1968 - RAF Seletar, Singapoore. Flew Twin Pioneer aircraft with 209 Squadron, ferrying Gurkas and their wives plus equipment to Malaysia and Borneo.
May 1968 to May 1969 - RAF Bawdsey, Suffolk. Fighter controller
May 1969 to June 1971 - RAF Medmenham, Buckinghamshire.
June 1974 to May 1975 - RAF Tern Hill, Shropshire.
May 1975 to November 1975 - RAF Episcopi, Cyprus.
December 1975 to September 1978 - RAF Marham. Simulator instructor.
Summary: Reel 5 - Research suggests that there used to be a bakery in Ramsgate owned by a Mr Bourn, which suggests that Ramsgate is the mystery location in this reel.
