This film is held by the Imperial War Museum (ID: MGH 6585).

Synopsis

I. "LAE AND HUON PENINSULA. 9TH AUSTRALIAN DIVISION TRANSPORTED AND SUPPLIED BY UNITS OF 7TH US AMPHIBIOUS FORCE." General views of convoy in line off New Guinea. Landing beach - landing ships (including LST 475, LST 457 and LST 456) disembark their troops, supplies and vehicles. Views of coastline: local boats and small patrol craft can be seen. Sighting of artillery. Footage of aero engine and of wrecked makeshift buildings (possibly remains of a temporary airfield).

II. "LAE, NADZAB AND BOGADJIN. 7TH AUSTRALIAN DIVISION TRANSPORTED AND SUPPLIED BY UNITS OF 5TH US AIR FORCE." Air-to-air shots of transport aircraft flying over jungle. Inside camera-aircraft, boxes of supplies (including tomato juice) are tied together with rope, attached to parachutes and pushed out of the aircraft - parachutes open and the supplies descend.

III. "MOVEMENT ON LAND. SHINGLE RIVER BEDS PROVIDE THE ONLY NATURAL ROADS. MOVING THE US 155MM FIELD GUN BY TWO D7 TRACTORS." Shots of tractors moving the gun along jungle paths and river bed, navigating through foliage with some difficulty. Damaged makeshift wooden bridge across stream and shots of jungle road. (Reel 2) Gun is set up at sandbagged position and is fired. "25PDR MK II FOR COMPARISON" - poor quality shots of 25-pounder gun in action.

IV. "LIVING CONDITIONS." Shots of tented camp, including radio tent and shots of road. Salvation Army banner attached to trees. Soldiers in jeep and walking through jungle. Brief shots of cemetery (with wooden crosses). Local people and shots of beach (poor quality).

V. "THE LOST VALLEY. MT HAGEN VALLEY IN CENTRAL NEW GUINEA. A PARADISE 5000FT ABOVE SEA LEVEL." Shots of the valley and of local native villagers (including women and children). Elders in village smoke pipe and pose for camera. Soldiers build temporary wooden bridge across river. New Guinean soldiers march in formation.

Amateur film shot by Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Jump , Royal Artillery, and Major J L McCowen, REME, illustrating "some aspects of the problem of movement and supply" facing Australian troops during the advance in New Guinea.

Notes

Summary: Colonel Jump invented the Stiffkey-Stick sight introduced in late 1943 for use with the Bofors anti-aircaft gun. This film was shot while he was on a special visit to New Guinea in order to monitor the deterioration of ammunition in a tropical climate.

Production company: film begins with chalked logo for AORG (Army Operational Research Group).
