Synopsis
I. 'NORTH AFRICA.' The commentary introduces an item on the visit of King George VI to Tunis (June 12 1943) notable as being the first flight made abroad by an English Sovereign during wartime. King George VI is driven along a Tunis Street in an open tourer escorted by motorcycle outriders. The King inspects a Captured German PzKpfw VI Tiger tank Ausf E on the outskirts of Tunis, the vehicle appears to bear the formation sign of the British First Army on its hull. King George VI takes time to chat to a female officer of a French Women's Youth movement. Later, the King reviews motorised United States (US) troops accompanied by General Mark W Clark and Lieutenant General George S Patton. At an undisclosed Tunisian airfield the King bestows a knighthood on a kneeling Air Marshal Francis Linnell. King George VI, seated on the tonneau cover of a touring car, is driven past cheering members of the Eighth Army. The King later inspects the men of the 51st Highland Division watched by General Dwight D Eisenhower, General Sir Harold R L G Alexander, Admiral Sir Andrew B Cunningham and Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur W Tedder.
II. 'MALTA.' King George VI continues his tour with a visit to Malta where he is met by Viscount John S S P V Gort, Governor of Malta. The King visits a dressing station in Valletta watched by civilian crowds. King George is driven in an Austin Six saloon car past harbour buildings belonging to the National Steam and Ferryboat Company on a tour of the island.
III. 'CAPTURE OF PANTELLERIA.' The commentary outlines events leading to the Allied capture of the Italian island of Pantelleria (June 11 1943). General Dwight D Eisenhower is shown aboard HMS Aurora as the guest of Admiral Sir Andrew B Cunningham to observe the operation against Pantelleria. Ships of the Royal Navy (RN) fire a heavy barrage at targets on the island (HMS Aurora ?), forming part of an overall Allied sea and air attack lasting nearly one hundred hours. United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers are shown in flight apparently forming part of the Allied air bombardment of Pantelleria. A Tribal Class destroyer lays smoke during the RN barrage as the commentary explains that the importance of Pantelleria is in its future use as a "stepping stone" to Sicily and the Italian mainland. Air to ground footage shows the Italian island of Lampedusa pockmarked with Allied bomb impact craters. The commentary states that the island was used as a German E-boat base and as such, suffered the fate of Pantelleria. Italian naval and air force personnel forming part of Lampedusa's garrison of three thousand wave white sheets in capitulation. British Universal carriers enter a desolate hamlet on the island of Lampedusa. A Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) officer shouts directions by megaphone to disembarking British troops as Universal carriers are driven off the ramp of a tank landing craft (LCT). Italian Army prisoners of war read British fly-posters giving proclamations on POW mustering for transportation off Lampedusa and rules relating to the newly imposed curfew. Smiling British troops pose for the cameras.
