Synopsis

I. 'THE ROYAL FAMILY OF PERSIA.' A soldier of the Imperial Iranian Army stands guard in the grounds of a newly constructed modernist style Royal palace (Art Deco ?) that displays little of the ornamentation normally associated with traditional Persian architecture. Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi of Persia (Iran), Queen Fawzieh and Princess Shah Naz walk in the well tended gardens of the new palace accompanied by a large Alsatian dog. Princess Shah Naz plays with the Alsatian. The utilitarian design of the new palace is contrasted with the splendour of the interior of the old royal palace at Golestan (Hall of Mirrors). The Shah and Queen Fawzieh pose for the cameras sitting precariously in a two-man canoe that floats on the waters of a large swimming pool.

II. 'WAVELL IN THE MIDDLE EAST.' Viscount Archibald Wavell, dressed in civilian clothes, inspects a guard of honour drawn from a Sikh unit of the Indian Army. The commentary states that the former Commander-in-Chief of the Middle East made only a brief visit as he was on his way to assume the "high position of Viceroy" in India. Wavell is cheered by a contingent of Indian Army infantry. He later chats to a white Indian Army Lieutenant in the vicinity of the Pyramids of Giza, a YMCA building is evident in the background bearing the legend "The Jeanette Watson Hut" over its door.

III. 'THE ITALIAN BATTLE FRONT.' Smoke rises over a street in Naples, Campania, possibly after the explosion of a time bomb left by the retreating German forces. The commentary describes Naples as being "the pearl of the Mediterranean, now blackened and devastated at the hands of the retreating Huns." Panoramic footage shows Naples and the sweeping coastline of the Bay, with Monte Vesuvio (Mount Vesuvius) evident in the background. A British gun crew loads an Ordnance 3.7-in anti-aircraft gun in its emplaced position overlooking the Bay of Naples. Infantry from the United States (US) Fifth Army armed with Garand M1 .30-in self-loading rifles cross a Neapolitan street. US General Mark W Clark looks on as units of the Fifth Army (82nd Airborne Division ?) drive past him in soft-skinned vehicles. General Clark gets out of a Willys MB General Purpose Vehicle (Jeep) and climbs into a Piper L-4H Grasshopper light observation aircraft at a rough landing ground. Stock shots show hundreds of Italian civilians cheering and waving at the camera car as it is driven slowly through the throng. British Eighth Army tank crews inspect knocked-out German PzKpfw IV tanks (Ausf H with high-velocity KwK 40 7.5 cm gun ?) that lies abandoned by a roadside. A British Eighth Army M4 Sherman tank with a cast nose drives through an Italian town watched by local civilians. US sappers cut medieval roof timbers to form supports during reconstruction of bridges blown up by the retreating German forces. British General Bernard Law Montgomery and General Mark W Clark talk to each other prior to taking part in a unit inspection. South African infantry cover an Auster AOP observation aircraft with camouflage netting. An Auster aircraft taxies along a rough landing strip.

IV. 'NEW GUINEA.' Bare chested Australian infantry use a winch to unload supplies on wooden pallets from the cargo hold of a merchant ship, the supplies are later loaded onto waiting soft-skinned vehicles. The commentary stresses the point that despite the world's attention being diverted elsewhere, Australians and Americans are still fighting side by side in New Guinea in a relentless war against the Japanese. Australian military personnel (Royal Australian Air Force ?) unload United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft. A USAAF C-47 taxies prior to take off and is later shown in flight. Australian infantry disembark from a C-47 carrying their personal equipment and weapons. Australian troops examine a C-47 that has belly-landed apparently with its undercarriage still retracted. Papuan bearers help move supplies to the forward fighting areas to support an Allied attack on the Japanese-held airfield at Finschhafen. US infantry (US 32nd Infantry Division ?) move up to the firing line passing resting infantrymen of the 7th Australian Division. An Australian infantryman moves forward laden with the tripod of a Vickers heavy machine gun and a Thompson M1A1 .45-in sub-machine gun. US and Australian troops chat and smoke cigarettes together. Australian troops queue for food in a jungle camp. US infantry wade through a jungle swamp carrying Garand M1 .30-in self-loading rifles. US infantry fire a Browning air-cooled .30-in machine gun mounted on a tripod as the commentary stresses the danger that the Allies face from concealed Japanese snipers. US infantry carry wounded Australians on stretchers out of the jungle. US gun crews traverse and fire a Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun at an unseen target. Australian gun crews fire an Ordnance 3.7-in anti-aircraft gun at overflying Japanese aircraft (at high altitude, aircraft type unidentifiable).

V. 'THUNDERBOLTS OF DEATH.' United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Republic P-47(C ?) Thunderbolt fighters (Razorbacks) taxi at an unidentified English airfield, their engine cowls and fuselages bearing white European theatre banding. A USAAF groundcrewman fuels A P-47 Thunderbolt that has been parked and chocked on PSP (Perforated steel planking) is refuelled by a USAAF groundcrewman using a hose from a fuel bowser. The commentary highlights the role of the Thunderbolt fighters in acting as escorts for Flying Fortress bombers raiding occupied Northern Europe. USAAF P-47(C ?) Thunderbolts (4th Fighter Group ?) taxi prior to an escort mission. P-47(C ?) Thunderbolts of the US 78th Fighter Group based at Duxford in Cambridgeshire rendezvous at high altitude with USAAF Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers of the Eighth Air Force. Camera gun footage (CGF) shows cockpit views of a P-47 attacking a steam locomotive with .50-in bullet strikes very evident. CGF stock shots show P-47 Thunderbolts attacking German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109F and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters.
