Synopsis

I. 'PERSONALITY PARADE.' A guard of honour drawn from the Arab Legion presents arms on the arrival by car of Field Marshal Lord Alanbrooke in Transjordan (The Hashemite Kingdom of the Jordan). Alanbrooke later inspects a contingent of the Transjordan Frontier Force (armed with Lee-Enfield Mk III .303-inch rifles) at the Palace of Emir Abdullah. Field Marshal Alanbrooke chats with Emir Abdullah on the steps of the Royal Palace. Also present are Lord John S S P V Gort, General B C T Paget, Mr Kirkbride and Commander of the Arab Legion, Lieutenant-General John B Glubb. Elsewhere, Field Marshal Lord Alexander sits in a garden with his wife, Lady Alexander, and their three children. The family are shown looking at a map of Canada, which will be their new home following Alexander's appointment as Governor General.

II. 'PLASTICS.' A brief item on the new uses for plastics in the home. A woman places jars of preserves into a newly designed sink that has a heater built into it for jam making. Plastic work surfaces and plate racks are demonstrated for the benefit of the cameras. Elsewhere, plastic is used in the design of women's hats and shoes. Female models show off hats and shoes that have plastic in their designs.

III. 'NEWS FROM GERMANY.' Berlin civilians prepare for the cold winter months by felling the trees that line the Unter den Linden. A Berlin housewife collects some firewood from the balcony of a flat to feed her wood-burning Aga cooker. German women civilians use prams and improvised handcarts to collect coal from a distribution centre. Charcoal burners stoke kilns in a forest clearing. German women use handcarts to collect firewood from a forest.

IV. 'WORLD'S AIR SPEED RECORD.' Royal Air Force (RAF) groundcrew push record breaking Gloster Meteor F3 EE454 "Britannia" from its hangar and are later shown polishing its flight surfaces. Meteor EE454 is painted in the standard RAF day fighter camouflage scheme of the period. Close-up footage shows the aircraft's faired-over fuselage cannon ports and the lengthened engine nacelles of its Derwent power plant. Calibration cameras are set up on the cliffs near Herne Bay (Kent) for the timed section of the record breaking flight attempt. Brief footage shows the mobile radar unit set up on the cliffs near St Mary's Church. The second aircraft involved in the speed record attempt Gloster Meteor F3 EE455 is displayed for the camera, its all yellow colour scheme contrasting with the drabness of its stablemate's livery (EE455 was unofficially known as "The Yellow Peril"). Gloster Aircraft Chief Test Pilot Eric Greenwood climbs into Meteor EE455 and is shown taking off for his attempt at the world speed record (November 7 1945). Meteor EE455 makes a high-speed pass over Herne Bay. Group Captain H S Wilson is assisted by his ground crew as he is strapped into the cockpit of Meteor F3 EE454 "Britannia." The aircraft is shown making a high speed low-level over St Mary's Church on the timed stage of its overall figure of eight aerial circuit that stretches between North Foreland in the east and the Isle of Sheppey in the west. Aerial footage shows the Meteor's speed over the sea and rapid approach to the cliffs at Herne Bay (this footage is likely to have been taken on a practice run as all non-essential equipment had been removed from the aircraft during the speed record attempts). RAF ground crews cheer when they learn that Group Captain Wilson has captured the world air speed record for Britain at 606 mph in Meteor EE454 "Britannia" (November 7 1945). Wilson and Greenwood pose for photos in front of EE454.
