Synopsis

I. 'ATS IN THE MIDDLE EAST.' British Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) members are helped from the back of a truck on arrival at the ATS training centre at Sarafand, Palestine. ATS recruits are marched to an initial interview with an ATS Lieutenant seated at a desk. The recruits are taken to their sleeping quarters by an ATS corporal. Elsewhere, ATS recruits receive uniforms and personal kit from a wooden stores hut. An army instructor uses a trestle blackboard during a lecture on "The properties of gases", given to ATS members, which is followed by instruction on the workings of the internal combustion engine. ATS members change main vehicle headlight bulbs and tighten radiator hoses as they practice the theory learned in the classroom. Automotive parts are inventoried and allocated storage space by ATS members working vehicle spares depot. ATS members form part of a march-past through a street in Tel Aviv, watched by local residents.

II. 'PERSONALITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST.' British Ambassador to Egypt, Sir Miles Lampson smokes a cigarette and chats informally to acting Minister of State for Middle East, Sir Walter Monckton. General Sir Claude Auchinleck (C-in-C Middle East), Major-General Russell L Maxwell (US Army Forces in the Middle East) and Air Marshal Tedder form part of a reception committee awaiting the arrival of the new Minister of State (Resident in the Middle East) R G Casey at Heliopolis Aerodrome.

III. 'DUKE OF GLOUCESTER'S TOUR.' The Duke of Gloucester, on a tour of the Middle East, reviews a line up of pilots from 213 Squadron RAF standing in front of Hawker Hurricane IIc fighter aircraft (Squadron code AK) at a Libyan airfield (Gambut West?). The Duke chats to the fighter pilots having been introduced by an RAF Squadron Leader. The Duke of Gloucester climbs aboard an RAF Junkers Ju 52/3m transport aircraft of 173 Squadron based at Heliopolis. The aircraft bears the legend "Libyan Clipper" on the side of its fuselage. Aerial footage taken from the mid-upper defensive position of the Junkers shows British motorised supply columns negotiating curving desert roads. An interior view of the passenger compartment of the Junkers aircraft shows the Duke of Gloucester enjoying the views during the flight. Elsewhere, in a desert setting, the Duke inspects a downed German Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighter aircraft with jettisoned cockpit canopy. The Duke of Gloucester, accompanied by Sir Miles and Lady Lampson, attends a reception in the gardens of the British Embassy in Cairo. The Duke is introduced to the Egyptian Premier Nahas Pasha, and Prince Mohammed Ali (King Farouk's uncle). The Duke visits a Royal Navy training establishment in Alexandria and reviews a parade made up of ratings and members of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS). The Duke meets Rear-Admiral Sir Philip Vian on the deck of an unidentified cruiser anchored at Alexandria.
