Synopsis
Eastern Region of Ghana showing large colourful grand festivals with processions of chiefs in Durbar. Asafo military organisation showing their uniform and flags and banners at their Asafo Tufiam or annual festival.
Moko Jumbie figure with masked dancers. Some general shots of area.
Subjects include Ghanaian independence celebrations at Saltpond, March 1957, including people gathering at the mosque, Asafo Company flag-swinging and drumming, schoolchildren's marching parade, public dancing, women wearing Nkrumah cloth, chief in procession with royal stool; the Krobo Ngmayem festival at Odumasi in 1957, featuring Mate Kole II, ceremonial drummers, priests, linguists and dancers; general beach and street scenes of Saltpond, including the shrine of Asafo Company No. 2; Fancy Dress masquerade at Saltpond, featuring a stilt dancer (sakrabudu or Moko Jumbie).
Known individuals include Mate Kole II (1910-1990), Konor of Manya Krobo.
Production / Donor Details: This collection of films was shot by Miss Wilma Gladstone O.B.E., who first went to the Gold Coast from Edinburgh as an Education Officer at the Teacher Training College in Tamale in May 1945.
