RAINMAKERS

This film is held by the BFI (ID: 337048).

Synopsis

A documentary looking at Rhodesian techniques for "seeding" clouds to create rainfall. It includes various shots of different types of clouds and looks at why and how clouds form and why rain does not always occur. Failure of the rains causes problems in Rhodesia, and the Rhodesian Meteorological Service experiments on controlling the time and place of rainfall. Cloud seeding operations began in early 1973 and 1974, and footage is shown of a plane seeding clouds with silver iodide crystals and firing the cartridges. It also looks at the conditions necessary for successful cloud seeding and the early DC.3 a/c technique for seeding clouds. Also shown are individual farmers firing "rain rockets" to seed clouds.
