Synopsis

Road construction in the high forest mountain country. Porters carrying their loads in tough terrain. The villages and countryside in the high mountain area around Mt Kina Balu.

Extended sequence showing the rocky summit of Mt Kina Balu. Operational flight into mountainous areas by De Havilland Dragon Rapide of Malayan Airways. Flight by a'Rapide' from the high mountain area to Jesselton on the seacoast shot from the aircraft and showing the town airport and port facilities at Jesselton.

Production / Donor Details: These films were taken by Edmund Kennedy Wicksteed, 1916-1992. In the 1930s he worked as a customs officer in Malaya, was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore, & was imprisoned at Lintang Internment Camp, Kuching, Sarawak. After the war he served as a customs officer, District Officer, & then joined the secretariat in Jesseleton before becoming Resident in various districts in Borneo. He returned to England in 1966 when Borneo became independent. He was awarded the CBE for colonial service.
